Satilla Regional Library internship-Douglas, GA

The Satilla Regional Library System serves the residents of Atkinson and Coffee counties with six libraries. For more than fifty years the Satilla Regional Library System has provided information services and engaging programming to the local community and theSoutheast Georgiaarea.

The internship at the Satilla Regional Library is a dual option program that allows some customization centered on the student’s professional interests.

Both options consist of a core of Public Services exposure designed to allow the intern to gain hands on experience that will translate to public library service in most library systems.  A further specialization in either Collection Management or Programming or both may be chosen depending on the length of the internship.

The Public Services Core will consist of training and work in circulation desk operations to include: ILS use, customer interaction, basic reference procedures,ILL, Dewey Decimal training, shelf reading and shelving.

The Collection Management Option will consist of exposure to professional issues and operations centered on the maintenance of a public library collection.  Specifically, use of a standardized collection evaluation tool (such as the CREW manual) to assess and deselect materials in a collection, review of professional publication reviews to assess items to be added and training on a major material vendor’s interface to purchase materials.  Training in copy-cataloging will be offered depending on availability from the state library that provides the statewide PINES Evergreen ILS system.  Processing of materials with barcodes, spine labels, security tapes etc will also be reviewed.

The Programming Option will focus on the development of programs for children-teens and/or adults, depending on the professional interests of the student.  Programming for adults will involve the development and presentation of classes using the Satilla Regional Library System’s Mobile Wireless Computer Lab as well as the development and vetting of programs using outside experts on a variety of subjects.

The internship will take place mainly at the headquarters library inDouglas,Georgiawith the possibility of some activities in our satellite branches in other nearby towns.  The work schedule will be adjusted to meet needs of scheduled classes, but will largely be from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm two days a week for a 9 hour per week internship and four days a week for an 18 hour internship.  Presentation of work developed under the Programming Option may require work on other days and times.
