Job Description / Internship
Background
The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System enriches the community by inspiring a love of reading, providing a dynamic resource for intellectual, creative and recreational pursuits, and enabling residents to live a life of learning. The library is a department of the Leon County government and serves a population of 292,000 people. It is composed of the LeRoy Collins Main Library, six Branch Libraries, and Outreach Services. The library is in the midst of a multi-year plan of action, the Essential Libraries Initiative. Through this initiative we are re-envisioning how we deliver service to the community with the goal of keeping the library relevant and community focused.
The Northeast Branch Library is the largest and busiest Branch Library in the system. A committed, experienced staff has stewardship over a large print and media collection, public internet computer area, and meeting rooms, and serves a diverse population of adults, children, and teens. The Branch Library provides a variety of programs, reference services, technology assistance, reader’s advisory, and meeting spaces for community groups.
Tasks
The Intern in this position will gain valuable general experience in a public library setting. The Intern will assist with a variety of duties including reference service, programming activities, collection maintenance, and creating displays. During this experience, Interns will strengthen their customer service skills and learn about best practices in a large Branch Library setting. Interns are welcome to propose their own project ideas.
Specific Tasks:
The Intern’s tasks may include the following:
· Assisting/shadowing on the information desk
· Creating engaging book displays
· Providing technology assistance and training to children, teens, and adults
· Assisting staff with programming including Story Times, LEGO Club, and Book Clubs
· Assisting with collection management activities including shelving, weeding, and shifting
· Assisting with special projects and outreach
· Touring and shadowing at various service areas throughout the library system’s main and branch libraries for other experiences
· Attending staff meetings
Student Intern Hours
The Intern’s hours will be scheduled during the library staff work schedules:
Tuesday and Thursday 10:15-8:15
Wednesday and Friday 9:15-6:15
Saturday 9:45-4:15
Closed Sunday and Monday
Skills Needed
Qualified candidates must be enrolled in an ALA accredited graduate program in information or library science. Additionally, candidates must have the following skills:
· Time management and organizational skills
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
· Basic customer service skills
· The ability to work independently
· Strong written and oral communication skills
