College Internship Program

The State Board of Administration (SBA) College Internship Program is designed to develop competencies for those seeking a career in finance, accounting and management information systems. The program helps to develop successful leaders in today’s work environment through “hands-on” work place experience.

The internship experience facilitates the development of professional and technical skills. Internships opportunities may be found in the areas of Global Equities, Fixed Income, Real Estate, Private Equity, Strategic Investments, Investment Policy & Economics, Investment Programs & Governance, Business Administrative Services, Accounting, Auditing, Financial Operations, and Information Technology. Internships are part-time and paid. The duration is about 3 months.

Candidate Requirements
A candidate for the SBA College Internship Program must be at least in their junior year working toward an undergraduate degree or pursuing a graduate degree with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to candidates with majors in Finance, Economics, Business, Accounting and Management Information Systems. The following skills are required: advanced computer skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to work in a team/project oriented environment and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Internship Opportunities
Investment & Economics Research Internship
1) Assist senior analysts with development and calculation of cost funds, expenses ratios, and performance measurement
2) Perform comparative analyses against benchmarks to identify weaknesses in performance structures
3) Assist in due diligence analysis of new investments.
4) Build forecasting models
5) Develop databases and spreadsheets

Accounting & Auditing Internship
1) Prepare monthly pricing and interest calculations
2) Assist in preparation of various reconciliations
3) Enter and submit journal vouchers (JVs) into financial system
4) Review source documents to make sure transactions have been approved properly
5) Enter invoices into financial database

Information Technology Internship
1) Assist in diagnosing and solving hardware and application problems.
2) Install and upgrade desktop computer equipment and software applications
3) Assist in the selection of computer resources for their projects and duties
4) Assist in the analyzing of network, intranet and internet problems.

Examples of possible area specific intern responsibilities:
Investment & Economics Research Internship
Strategic Investments:

  • Assist in due diligence analysis of new investments
  • Assist in preparation of investment approval memos
  • Develop an understanding of opportunistic debt, Mezzanine debt, activist equity, timber, hedge funds, and legal structures of investment partnerships.

Private Equity:

  • Assist in due diligence analysis of new investments
  • Assist in screening prospective investments
  • Assist in maintaining fund overview database
  • Develop an understanding of leveraged buyouts, venture capital, mergers, acquisitions and corporate finance.

Fixed Income:

  • Generate Company Brief Reports
  • Learn swap/switch CTD calculations

Global Equity:

  • Become familiar with international markets
  • Prepare and present reports
  • Accurately audit fee bills
  • Gain exposure to international asset managers and learn how investments work

Real Estate:

  • Maintain database for existing portfolio investments
  • Maintain database for new investment opportunities
  • Develop portfolio reports
  • Attend manager presentation (as available)

Investment Programs & Governance:

  • Assist with analytical projects covering corporate governance issues
  • Assist with individual proxy votes and related company analysis
  • Assist with researching emerging topics and proposed governance reforms
  • Investment Policy & Economics:
  • Using Excel and Eagle PACE extract data from Economics databases
  • Perform daily asset allocation stance audit function
  • Review internal and external reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Create control charts for asset class active risk

Accounting & Auditing Internships

  • Update quarterly real estate activity and calculate Net Operating Income (NOI)
  • Preform daily & monthly reconciliations of cash and investments
  • Assisting in analyzing transactions’ accuracy and appropriateness for various asset classes
  • Prepare quarterly real estate manager statement reconciliation
  • Prepare PE and SI transactions spreadsheet
  • Prepare monthly pricing and interest calculations
  • Assist in preparation of various reconciliations
  • Enter and submit journal vouchers (JVs) into financial system

Financial Operations:

  • Review source documents to make sure transactions have been approved properly.
  • Enter invoices into financial database.

Information Technology Internship

  • Configure, install and deliver new pc
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware problem
  • Develop proficiencies in Microsoft Office applications
  • Develop proficiencies in computer equipment maintenance
