Electronic Archives Technician


The Division of Library and Information Services, Florida Department of State is testing real-world strategies and methods for the long-term preservation of state government electronic records and documents in order to create a digital preservation program.   A special unit has been set up under a grant from the Library of Congress and is partnering with five other State Archives to create a Persistent Digital Archives and Library System (PeDALS) utilizing a private LOCKSS network.  This position will work under the Florida PeDALS State Coordinator to experiment with data description, capture, handling, migration and access methods, applying data warehousing techniques, and intelligent agent technologies to electronic records management and access tasks.  This position will also assist the Agency in working actively with state agencies, records managers, data processing staff, historians, archivists, librarians and other researchers on digital preservation issues.

Primary Responsibilities:  We seek to fill the Electronic Archives Technician position on the team classified as an OPS position. The successful candidate will take responsibility for addressing archival issues such as electronic file-naming schemes, metadata creation, data file conversion and migration for electronic records and documents that will be ingested into the PeDALS system.

Qualifications:   Effective verbal and written skills, demonstrated familiarity with electronic file types, data storage methods and media, college or university coursework in computer science or library/information science, Archives Management or a directly related field, demonstrated knowledge of SXML, demonstrated knowledge of a framework based programming language such as Visual Basic, C++, etc.  Other relevant combinations of education and experience can be considered.   Special qualifications:   Experience with programming using relational databases and experience with MS BizTalk desired.

Hours:  This is a part-time, temporary position starting in June and ending December,  2010.  This is an OPS position and does not include benefits.

Salary: Minimum salary for the job classification is $17.50 for 20 hours per week.
