Responsibilities: The University of Central Florida Libraries seeks a strong, creative and dynamic leader for the position of Head of Reference Services. Reference Services is the library’s principal information gateway and is responsible for critical activities such as providing frontline reference services and assisting with research. While leading a department of 15 library faculty and staff in the delivery of research and information services supporting learning, research and teaching, the successful candidate for this position also will:
• Provide leadership for Ask a Librarian, Florida and United States Documents services, Research Consultations, InfoSource, and the Research and Information Desk.
• Set goals and objectives for the department, build a departmental team that develops innovative reference services and fosters initiatives for service improvement.
• Hire, train, organize workloads and assignments, delegate responsibilities and monitor and evaluate faculty and staff performance.
• Work closely with other department heads in the library to provide direction and guidance to Reference librarians, whose assignments blend reference, instruction, and collection development.
• Collaborate with other Public Services department heads (Circulation, Information Literacy and Outreach, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery) to create and articulate a vision and plan for 21st century library services.
• Serve as an integral member of the Libraries Management Council, and report to the Associate Director for Public Services.
Qualifications
Required
• Master’s degree from an American Library Association-accredited institution
• Experience in Reference Services, at an academic or research library
• Demonstrated effective management, administrative, and leadership ability, over five years of increasingly responsible positions
• Strong written and oral communication skills
Preferred
• Record of scholarly contribution, professional participation, and service
• Commitment to service excellence
• Ability to achieve concrete results by motivating and empowering staff and colleagues
• Knowledge of trends in reference services, library and information technology, demonstrated by experience in successful integration of new technology and innovation into reference services
• Excellent organizational skills
Environment: The University of Central Florida is the nation’s 2nd largest public university, enrolling over 59,000 students and offering 91 bachelor’s, 92 master’s, and 29 doctoral programs. Salary and Rank: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position with insurance and retirement benefits, 22 paid annual days, 13 sick days, 9 holidays, and no state income tax.
