Arlington County, VA seeks a Digital Archivist to carry out a full range of archival functions on digitized, born-digital and physical archival materials according to archival standards and best practices and to provide expertise in establishing archival policies and procedures related to the curation of these materials.
This newly created full time position located in the Central Library will be responsible for planning, managing, and executing the digitization and other archival projects for the community archival collections with a focus on the digitized, born-digital and physical archival materials.
- Specific duties include:
coordinating and managing the acquisition of digitized, born-digital and physical archival materials;
processing and digitizing for preservation digital, born-digital and physical archival materials;
managing and establishing policies polices and procedures related to the cataloging of the County’s digital repository, including technical policies related to the maintenance of the system;
ensuring that collection materials are identifiable and available through the digital repository;
managing relationships with regional and national databases/clearinghouses and coordinating data transfers;
assisting researchers with inquiries related to the special and archival collections including staffing a public service desk;
selecting and preparing digitized archival materials for online and physical exhibits and other marketing opportunities;
coordinating development and maintenance activities for the digital repository;
preparing grant proposals with significant digitization components; and,
coordinating the work of staff assistants, volunteers and interns. - Online application required.
MINIMUM: Master’s of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited college or university with a concentration in Archival Science/Archival Studies, Archival Management, Digital Curation or similar field plus two years of professional experience in archives or special collections. Demonstrated experience with database systems used for archival work.
Desirable:
Experience in a public, special or academic library:
Experience with digital imaging and standards for digitization or archival material in various formats;
Demonstrated knowledge of the current trends in the digitization of archival material for access and preservation;
Demonstrated knowledge of archival description and metadata standards for both physical and digital collection materials (including Dublin Core, EAD, EAC-CPF);
Experience with the use and administration of digital archival repository and collection management software;
Demonstrated knowledge of imaging applications (preferably Adobe Photoshop);
Demonstrated knowledge of metadata creation and digitization best practices, awareness of new technology and trends and their application for imaging services;
Conversant with both analog and digital format in relation to audio and visual materials;
Familiarity with intellectual property rights and Fair Use as applied to libraries;
Effective problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills;
Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills;
Enthusiasm for innovation and change, and interest on keeping abreast of new developments;
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a production-oriented environment;
Strong public service orientation.
