Organizational Overview
The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) is a public-private partnership established in 2013 that is dedicated to improving the 10,000 acres of public parkland throughout Jamaica Bay and the Rockaway peninsula for local residents and visitors alike. With its partners at the National Park Service, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and the New York State Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, JBRPC works to expand public access; increase recreational and educational opportunities; foster citizen stewardship and volunteerism; preserve and restore natural areas, including wetland and wildlife habitat; enhance cultural resources; and ensure the long-term sustainability of the parklands. The JBRPC is a partner project of the Fund for the City of New York (FCNY). Both JBRPC and the FCNY are tax-exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the federal tax code.
Gateway National Recreation Area is a large and diverse urban park with 27,000 acres spanning Sandy Hook in New Jersey and Jamaica Bay and Staten Island in New York It offers green spaces, beaches, wildlife and outdoor recreation, all alongside historic structures and cultural landscapes. As part of the National Park Service (NPS), Gateway NRA’s mission is to preserve and protect for future generations the natural, cultural, and historic resources of the park. It is the 4th most visited National Park Service unit with more than 9.2 million annual visitors.
JBRPC/NPS Media Education Coordinator
The JBRPC and the National Park Service – Gateway National Recreation Area (GNRA) seek one temporary full-time Media Education Coordinator. The Media Education Coordinator will support the Every Kid Outdoors (EKO) Initiative that seeks to ensure every 4th grade student and their family has the opportunity to experience their federal public lands and waters, with a special focus on under-served communities. Due to local restrictions and guidelines in light of the public health crisis caused by COVID-19, the EKO Initiative seeks to build virtual park-based experiences through various technologies and multimedia platforms. The ideal candidate will have experience using Adobe Creative Suite, along with other multimedia platforms to create engaging and informative video and graphics that vividly capture parks in Jamaica Bay and Rockaway. The Media Education Coordinator will support this initiative and report to the National Park Service Education Supervisory Park Ranger at GNRA and perform a variety of tasks to support JBRPC and National Park Service education programs. The Media Education Coordinator will support the partners of the Gateway Education Collaborative: the NPS, JBRPC, New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium, and the Urban Soils Institute (USI). The Media Education Coordinator will work remotely and at park sites throughout Jamaica Bay and Rockaway as well as off-site at area schools. The Media Education Coordinator should be highly motivated, possess a positive and can-do attitude, be easily adaptable and excited to learn new things, and have the ability to multi-task.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Creation of virtual park tours by performing field-based filming and video production via Adobe Creative Suite or similar platforms.
• Research and introduce technologies and media platforms for NPS and partners to utilize and improve virtual learning programming
• Aid in the design of partner websites and the incorporation of virtually syncopated elements with physical park locations and education programs
• May be asked to assist in presenting and facilitating programs in and around Jamaica Bay that have been developed for Every Kid Outdoors partners (Coastal Habitat Heroes; Project Birdwing; Beach Exploration; Urban Soils Keepers).
• May be asked to assist in outreach to school administrators and teachers to promote the Every Kid Outdoors Initiative, as well as inquiring about preferred virtual learning methods and goals.
Qualifications/Skills:
• Bachelors degree required with relevant experience. Degree in related field preferred.
• Experience or interest in parks and environmental education.
• Knowledgeable in Adobe Creative Suite.
• Familiarity and experience with photo and video editing software.
• Experience with or interest in visual storytelling.
• Professional demeanor and ability to engage the public in the work of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a group.
• Ability to work cross-functionally across external partners and cultivate strong interpersonal relations with education community and other partners.
• Ability to maintain a flexible schedule.
• Ability to work remotely and achieve goals/tasks by deadlines.
• Strong organization skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to pass background investigation.
Term:
Six months from date of hire. August – February, with a possibility of being hired in July.
Weekly hours will not exceed 40 hours per week. Schedule: Monday – Friday. Occasional weekend work may be required.
Compensation:
$32/hour.
