Librarian III @ Mobile Public Library

Located on the Alabama Gulf Coast, Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras and is home to some of the nation’s finest seafood. Mobile is the third largest city in Alabama, and is the county seat.  The City of Mobile and the greater Alabama Gulf Coast provides the opportunity for adventure and excellent recreational opportunities, affordable housing and a variety of cultural activities to choose from.

The Mobile Public Library has 9 branch libraries, a Local History & Genealogy Library and provides Bookmobile/Outreach services.  The Mobile Public Library serves a diverse population of 415,395.

Successful Candidates for this position must have top-notch supervisory skills. It is essential that the person in this position be able to direct the activities of others while maintaining excellent customer relations skills.  Successful candidates must have superior abilities in the area of collection development, acquisitions, reference services, reader’s advisory, current reference tools, bibliographic sources and classification systems and the ability to apply this knowledge to assigned areas of responsibility.

Successful candidates should also possess excellent organizational skills, report writing skills and a strong attention to detail.  Additionally, operational support may be needed in the areas of statistical reporting, sound fiscal planning and management, opening and closing of the branch, collection development, and making presentations.

Candidates must have the ability to communicate well with both internal and external stakeholders. Candidates must have a thorough knowledge of current trends, technology and “best practices” for public libraries.  Experience working with a large staff and working with diverse populations is a plus. Verbal, written and computer skills are essential.

A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited institution is required.

Salary Information

Salary starts at $49,409.10 annually, depending on qualifications and experience; based on a 40 hr/wk. Additional benefits include a retirement plan, health insurance, vacation and sick leave.
