Metadata Analyst @ the University of South Florida Libraries

USF Libraries is looking for a highly motivated innovative person for the position of metadata management analyst in the Collections and Discovery Department. This person would be responsible for creating and standardizing metadata to maintain the Libraries’ SQL and Access database content. In addition, this position would coordinate metadata enhancement projects in the Libraries’ PostgreSQL integrated library system.  This position will afford an opportunity to work with the digital collections and linked data teams on metadata projects. The ideal candidate would contribute to quality control, database integrity, and metadata enrichment through the implementation of automated data tools, and possess innovative technology-focused abilities, including developing, supporting, and troubleshooting scripts and workflow processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the USF Library’s e-resources database
  • Ensures standardization of data from vendor-provided spreadsheets for EB+ loads
  • Administers ebook electronic resources management (ERM) database
  • Perform regular metadata maintenance on Library’s Aleph database
  • Search, export and analyze data from Aleph
  • Use formulas to match spreadsheets from Aleph with vendor title lists
  • Analyze Marc record spreadsheets for errors and identify issues that need fixing in Aleph database
  • Run global changes to batch update MARC records in Aleph
  • Participate in vendor data management projects
  • Ensure quality control for catalog record loads including statistical analysis
  • Participate in special metadata projects
  • Explore linked data projects including data reconciliation, RDF/XML conversion, and Triplestore database interactions
  • Assist Digital Collections metadata update and standardization projects
  • Support metadata research and grant opportunities

 

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field with two years of work experience in a library. Appropriate college coursework may substitute for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other field involving software and analytical training is preferred
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet applications such as Excel or OpenRefine, including analysis and manipulation of data from various sources using complex formulas and functions
  • Experience with database content management, such as Access and SQL
  • knowledge of programing and scripting languages (XSLT, Python, JSON, Visual Basic)
  • Experience with scripting for manipulating data or creating automated processes
  • Familiarity with Regular Expressions
  • Knowledge of MARC and RDA cataloging standards
  • Knowledge of Integrated Library Systems, such as Aleph
  • Experience with markup languages and tools that manipulate library data, such as MARCedit, PyMARC desirable
  • Familiarity with linked data or the semantic web

The Collections and Discovery Department in the Library acquires, organizes, and manages library collections in all formats for the USF Libraries. The Department’s librarians, professionals, and staff work collaboratively in a newly renovated open office environment to ensure efficient access to quality information sources meeting the research and learning needs of the institution’s faculty and students. Functional units include collections management, metadata/cataloging, and resource sharing. The department is located adjacent to Digital Scholarship Services, the fiscal unit, and library administration to offer further opportunities for cross-departmental cooperative projects.
