Posting 687304: The Michigan State University Libraries is offering a current Master of Library Science student the opportunity to further their training in the rewarding area of academic librarianship. The Diversity Scholar Program advances the Libraries’ and the University’s commitment to continuously developing and retaining a diverse workforce. The Diversity Scholar position is virtual due to COVID-19 and we are recruiting from a nation-wide pool of candidates. Reporting to the Coordinator of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Education in the MSU Libraries, the Diversity Scholar will contribute to the development and execution of a DEI education plan for library staff. Specific activities will involve conducting assessment within the Libraries to identify high priority educational needs, and researching, reviewing, and making recommendations for ongoing DEI staff development programming.
The Diversity Scholar will also have latitude and flexibility to propose and complete additional library projects, based on the Scholar’s interests and organizational needs. This position will have ample access to mentoring and professional development opportunities in the virtual environment, as well as a variety of virtual first-hand experiences of working in an academic library through online job shadowing and participating in virtual meetings and training sessions for library colleagues.
Qualifications:
Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program; strong interest in academic librarianship; effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate and demonstrate a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff; ability to work both collaboratively and independently; ability to prioritize and balance various library needs; attention to detail; capacity and commitment to pursue professional development.
Preferred Qualifications:
Membership in a library professional organization; active involvement with professional library diversity initiatives such as, but not limited to, the Association of Research Libraries Diversity Scholars and ALA Spectrum Scholars.
Compensation:
$15.00 per hour, 19 hours per week for 6 months; $1,000 for professional development. Flexible scheduling available.
