Purpose and Scope
The Athens-Clarke County Library has an immediate opening for a weekend librarian. The person in this position works two weekends each month (Saturday and Sunday) in the Information Services Department. The ideal candidate will be energetic and an enthusiastic team player with a strong commitment to public service.

Two weekends — 24 hours/month
Weekend hours required
Part Time Position, Without Benefits
Salary: $11-$13/hour, D.O.Q
Start Date: Immediately

The schedule for this position is two weekends per month:
Saturdays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m.-6 p.m.

Minimum Training & Experience
This position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited university or current enrollment in an ALA-accredited MLS program with requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position; or a bachelor’s degree and two years’ public library experience, or any combination of education, training and experience that provides requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for the position.

Previous public library reference experience and bi-lingual ability (English-Spanish) is preferred but not required.

Essential Functions

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned, and job assignments and work schedule are subject to change in the future.

1.    Provides reference services to library patrons, in person and by telephone, using both print and online resources.
2.    Provides computer assistance to patrons.
3.    Handles and executes applications for U.S. Passports.
4.    Works cooperatively with other library staff, both in the department and with other staff in the regional system.
5.    Maintains knowledge of basic library policies and procedures.
6.    Performs other related duties as assigned

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1.    Knowledge of basic reference sources, both in print and online
2.    Knowledge of customer service principles and skill in providing customer service to patrons of all ages.
3.    Knowledge of general library principles and philosophy
4.    Knowledge of library practices and of ARLS policies, procedures and activities.
5.    Knowledge of PINES library catalog, library subscription databases and GALILEO databases.
6.    Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
7.    Ability to answer questions and explain procedures and policies.
8.    Ability to employ appropriate reference interview techniques in person and on the phone in order to accurately determine users’ information needs and to match their needs with appropriate resources based on factors such as reading level, depth and breadth of information required, time frames and more.
9.    Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
10.    Ability to keep up-to-date on technology trends and developments, and to learn new technologies in a timely manner
11.    Ability to learn U.S. Passport execution procedures and to clearly communicate those policies and requirements to patrons.
12.    Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance
13.    Ability to provide readers’ advisory services by recommending titles and subjects to library patrons
14.    Ability to remain calm under busy, stressful conditions
15.    Ability to use, suggest, and demonstrate library subscription databases and other online services to patrons.
16.    Ability to use, understand and assist patrons with computer applications
17.    Ability to work with people with tact, patience and courtesy.
18.    Must be self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
19.    Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize assignments and activities.
20.    Skill in using Office computer software, including Word and Excel
21.    Skill in oral and written communication.
