Youth Services Librarian @ Calhoun County

Under the supervision of the Director, the YS Supervisor is responsible for the planning, management, and operation of Children’s and Teen programs, collections, and services for the Calhoun County Library. The Youth Services Librarian is assisted by a talented and dedicated paraprofessional staff and the community to provide quality programs and services at the library and through outreach activities. In the absence of both the Manager and Director, the Youth Services Supervisor acts as the Librarian in Charge.

The ideal candidate has: a commitment to and respect for children and teens; the ability to establish and maintain solid working relationships inside and outside of the library; a love of reading; awareness of books for youth; very strong technology and customer service skills; effective written and oral communication skills, including public speaking; enthusiasm for meeting and interacting with people and participating in the cultural and intellectual activities of the community; and experience supervising/developing a positive, enthusiastic, customer-oriented team.

The Calhoun County Library has a strong record of collaboration with schools in the county. This has extended to author events, publication of student poetry anthologies, pollinator education and field trips, and regular participation in school events. Significant collaboration with schools is planned for upcoming coding and junior entrepreneur education programs.

Calhoun County is a small, rural county approximately 40 minutes south of Columbia and approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes from Charleston. Applicants must be comfortable working in a crowded environment with numerous children and patrons of diverse backgrounds. This is a 35 hour/week position (FT) that requires some evenings, occasional Saturdays, summer availability, and a drug test.

Salary is $1,576.92 bi-weekly ($41,000/year), and the County offers an excellent benefits package. Calhoun County does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status or disability.

This position requires an ALA-accredited MLIS degree and one year of experience working in a library. A certified teacher with three years’ experience working with either (1) early childhood literacy and/or (2) youth and their literature will also be considered.

(NOTE: We will consider passionate and talented students on track to earn these certifications, provided they plan to complete their program of study as a distance education program, including that of the University of South Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science.)
