Position Description

This position reports to and works in partnership with the Library Director to maintain a positive and productive organizational culture, with a focus on the Library’s mission, vision, and values. Therefore, a specialized knowledge of library and technical skills is required.  This position supervises, coordinates and evaluates all aspects of children and young adult collections and programming, including outreach and marketing.  This position is responsible for the acquisition of library books, supplies and equipment, and the cataloging of all children’s and young adult library materials.   This position answers reference questions, including taking referrals from other library staff. This position works in a public environment characterized by frequent deadlines, constant interruptions, multiple tasks and potential conflicts with the public.  The Youth Services Librarian reports solely to the Library Director.  Movement within the library is essential.
Essential Functions
 

  • Plans and implements programming for children, young adults, parents/caregivers, educators and those adults that work with children throughout the year, including storytimes, book discussions for children, book talks, holiday programs, special activities, library promotions and reading incentives, and other programming opportunities.
  • Works closely with local schools and educators to coordinate and conduct in person and remote programming for all ages.
  • Assist patrons of all ages in locating materials for enjoyment or study and providing assistance with the automated card catalog and reference.
  • Check materials out for patrons.
  • Under the direction of the Library Director, weed damaged or outdated materials from the children and young adult collections.
  • Consult professional review sources to select materials to add to collection.
  • Perform original and copy cataloging of children’s and young adult materials.
  • Prepare marketing information for a year-long calendar of activities for patrons of all ages.
  • Maintains the digital event calendar on the website.
  • Design, prepare, and execute children’s and young adult programming with a focus on early literacy standards and STEM based activities.
  • Create seasonal marketing materials and displays for the children’s and young adult sections.
  • Develop and implement a Summer Reading Program and other literacy events throughout the year.
  • Plan and/or assist at special library events.
  • Train and oversee support staff such as pages, volunteers, and community service workers for programming assistance as needed.
  • Assist patrons with reference questions utilizing electronic and print formats.
  • Assist and instruct patrons on the use of the automated card catalog and location of library materials.
  • Maintain staff timesheet and meet payroll deadlines.
  • Participates in local, state, and national library meetings and associations and attends relevant continuing education activities and community organization meetings and functions.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development to maintain current and up-to-date knowledge of library professional and service trends.
  • Monitor ongoing children’s and young adult circulation activities to maintain the integrity of the collection.
