PURPOSE & SCOPE
Reporting to the Deputy Chair of the Cuban Heritage Collection, the Project Assistant is responsible for creating metadata for theater materials held by the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) selected for digitization as part of a grant-funded initiative to digitize sources for Cuban theater in Miami. The Project Assistant will also be responsible for researching and contacting rights holders as appropriate to obtain permission to digitize materials. (This position is grant-funded through November 30, 2011.)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates and enters relevant metadata into the digital library repository database for items selected for digitization from the Cuban Heritage Collection’s holdings (75%)
o Follows established data-entry standards set up by the University of Miami Libraries to describe archival materials in a digital environment
o Enters descriptive metadata into CONTENTdm, the Libraries’ digital content-management system
o Properly handles fragile and rare materials
o Records technical and structural metadata
- Researches and corresponds with rights holders as appropriate (15%)
- Assists with the development and implementation of an online exhibition (10%)
- Communications, Relationships, and Service (Applicable toward all duties)
- Maintains helpful and supportive customer-service behavior with all library customers.
- Establishes effective interdepartmental relationships to increase unit effectiveness and disseminate information.
- Communicates frequently and effectively with CHC staff and other departmental staff or administration in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.
- Assists with special divisional, library-wide, and university-wide projects as assigned
- When possible, participates in committees and teams within and outside the Libraries to provide services to the Libraries, the University, and the community.
- Performs other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS
The Project Assistant reports directly to the Deputy Chair and Chief Operations Manager of the Cuban Heritage Collection. The Project Assistant is trained by the Metadata Librarian and works closely with the CHC Metadata Assistant.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Three years relevant work experience
- Experience in an academic or research library
- Oral and written fluency in English and Spanish
- Computer skills and proficiency in Windows operating system and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Access
- Ability to work productively in a team-based environment and the ability to share knowledge with others through effective communication skills
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
Preferred
- Familiarity with the research library environment and resources
