As a Youth Services/Young Adult Librarian, you will have a positive impact on our community and help shape the future by providing programs and other library services to children and teens.

This position works primarily with teens and children but also provides services to adults, including readers’ advisory and reference. The South County Regional Library Youth Services team includes a Senior Librarian and a Youth Services Associate. The Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library team includes a Senior Librarian, a Youth Services Librarian, and a Youth Services Library Associate. The successful candidate enjoys working with teens and children, positively embraces public library service, and demonstrates flexibility and good judgment that reflects a commitment to teamwork and customer service. Applicants who have experience collaborating with schools and community organizations that serve teens and children are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide stellar customer service by assisting patrons of all ages using Library resources and services, including computers, electronic resources, reference, and readers’ advisory.
  • Maintain a regular collection maintenance schedule and promotion of the children’s and teens’ collections through weeding, selection, and displays.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in readers’ advisory to children and teens.
  • May be assigned to participate in branch-specific and system-wide committees.
  • Present tours and programs for school and community groups visiting the library.
  • Provide technology training to staff and patrons
  • May be in charge of the library for specific days or shifts.
  • Explain and administer library policies and procedures
  • Actively seek and participate in professional development opportunities and stay abreast of emerging technology and trends.
  • Communicate and work effectively and tactfully with co-workers, sharing information and working cohesively as a team.
  • May supervise student volunteers and/or paraprofessional personnel.
  • Develop and maintain communication and contacts with nearby secondary schools and community organizations that serve children and teens.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate public library programs primarily for teens and children in accordance with the interest and demographics of the community.
  • May be in charge of the department in the absence of the Senior Librarian
  • Performing outreach and community engagement activities in collaboration with the Manager of Programming and Community Outreach.
