Sydney Sherry, a Media Communication Studies student, completed the Global Citizenship Certificate Program (GCC). The program offers a transformative experience by deepening students’ understanding of global issues and intercultural communication.
“Having completed this certificate, I have a deeper understanding of global challenges like social justice, but also a greater understanding of how connected we all are,” shared Sherry.
To receive the certificate, participants must complete four academic courses, attend eight intercultural events, and choose between an international experience or 75 hours of domestic engagement. Upon completion, students are then required to complete reflection papers on the required activities for program recognition.
With a dual interest in communication studies and social work, the program allowed Sherry to engage with complex global issues while practicing cultural humility and understanding. She emphasized that the journey was nothing short of eye-opening, and it strengthened her understanding of empathy and sensitivity.
Reflecting on special moments throughout the program, Sherry said attending the Climate Action lecture by United Nations President Dennis Francis was most memorable, “Hearing from His Excellency, you are getting the opportunity to learn from a global leader who is in a position to make real policy change,” she explained.
“Taking our small community of Tallahassee and connecting it to a global stage offers an incredible range of knowledge from small scale to large scale.” Like any rigorous program, the GCC presented its share of challenges. For Sherry, the wealth of opportunities to engage in global issues came with time constraints.
“I felt myself wanting to be involved in everything, but the events I was able to attend allowed me to practice my cultural sensitivity, communication, and flexibility within different cultural practices to enhance my problem-solving skills and a commitment to social justice on a global scale,” said Sherry.
After successfully completing the program, Sherry was also selected to speak at the GCC award ceremony where she urged students to get out of their comfort zone and be open to new perspectives saying, “College can sometimes put students in a bubble that shelters them from the broader issues of the world. Lean into intellectual curiosity and learn something outside of your bubble!”
Expressing deep gratitude to the GCCP staff and the Center for Global Engagement, Sherry added, “I am so glad that this program has people like these backing it and inspiring students year after year.”
