School of Communication Alumna Shares Career Tips for Success in Digital PR

School of Communication alumna Bri Godwin graduated in 2017 with a degree in Media & Communications studies and has since built a dynamic career in digital marketing.

Godwin currently serves as a Digital Public Relations (PR) Manager at Journey Further, a New York City-based agency. She describes her role in Digital PR as the intersection of public relations and search engine optimization. Journey Further focuses on improving clients’ digital footprint in the news and search engines.

“The transition into the position I’m in now has been a long road,” Godwin reflected on her remote work while living in Florida. Since the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, she has shifted to a hybrid format, working from across the country but traveling to New York for conferences and industry events with colleagues.

Godwin also noted, “I feel like I’ve had to constantly change and learn something new to stay knowledgeable and relevant. I urge any student pursuing a career path in this field to never stop learning.”

Recently, Godwin has appeared on several podcasts to share her insights into the industry. She has been on episodes of The Digital PR Podcast, where she compared insight on the digital PR industry from the U.S. for U.K. audiences; The Magic PR Podcast, where she discussed the best PR practices and shared her own real-world examples of campaigns she has executed; and The PR Podcast, where she talked about the importance of journalist/PR relationships and giving journalists an interesting story they will actually want to cover.

“[Each podcast is] a great opportunity to share my knowledge and discuss the industry,” Godwin expressed. “It was so great to chat with my fellow digital PR professionals across the pond.”

Godwin credits much of her success to her time at Florida State University. Through internships, including one with The Moore Agency, she developed tactical skills that continue to serve her today. “These agency internships directly impacted the trajectory of my career and shaped where I am today,” she said.
