Digital Curation Internship
The Florida International University College of Law Library is building its institutional repository and digital collection. Reporting to the Digital Initiatives and Legal Research Law Librarian, the student intern will support the digital publishing and open access initiatives of the FIU Law Library. This internship can either be virtual or in-person.
The digital curation student intern will:
- Research licensing and copyright information and permissions.
- Perform quality assurance checks on digitized material and metadata.
- Assist with all aspects of digital curation including:
- Creating content by data capture (and by digitizing print resources if in-person);
- Providing content by downloading, uploading, harvesting or otherwise ingesting existing digital resources; and
- Providing access to, and increasing the visibility of, digital resources by assigning descriptors and other metadata to the digital resources.
Qualifications
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to handle complex procedures requiring attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
Basic computer proficiency.
Preferred Qualifications
FSU School of Library and Information Studies graduate student.
Experience or coursework in field of law.
Experience working with databases, file transfers, digital collections software and operating systems.
Working knowledge of HTML, data transfer systems, and legal resource databases.
Requirements
The intern must have a computer with internet access, and hardware sufficient to engage in Skype chats or other virtual communications.
Work Load
This internship will be done for credit in pursuit of a SLIS degree. All interns will be expected to work the number of hours required for credit completion according the Florida State University policy. For a standard 3-credit internship:
- 135 hours/semester; 45 hours/credit
- For Fall or Spring semesters, 10 hours per week
The student intern is responsible for verifying that the number of hours worked are sufficient to obtain credit. The Digital Initiatives and Legal Research Law Librarian will work with the student intern to ensure that they are obtaining work experience sufficient to satisfy internship requirements.
