Kelly Farquharson, Associate Professor for the School of Communication Science & Disorders and director of the Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) lab at Florida State University, has published two new research papers. The first paper, titled “What if it isn’t ‘just artic’: The Case for the Single Sound Error” has been accepted for publication at Perspectives in Language and Learning and can be found here. Her second paper, in collaboration with S.R. Tambyraja, is titled “Exploring the factors that contribute to how school-based SLPs determine eligibility for children with speech sound disorders” and has been accepted for publication at Seminars in Speech and Language.

“I’m really excited to be a part of this research on eligibility for children with speech sound disorders,” says Farquharson. “This population of children require the clinical expertise of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), especially in public schools.”

As the director of the Children’s Literacy and Speech Sound (CLaSS) lab, Dr. Farquharson studies the cognitive, linguistic, orthographic, and environmental factors that influence how children with speech and language disorders acquire literacy skills. Dr. Farquharson is optimistic about what her research means for the children affected with speech sound disorders. “Continued research and advocacy in this area will hopefully lead us to better service provision for these children and more manageable caseloads for SLPs.”
