School of Information (iSchool) alumna Ricci Yuhico (MLIS ’12) recently made the New York Times list of “Six New Yorkers Who Made the City a Better, Cooler, Fairer Place in 2023.” She was recognized as the “Librarian for Teenagers.”

Six activists who have contributed to the city were recognized in the story. It aims to highlight New Yorkers, though you may not know them, who have come at some of the city’s biggest challenges from unexpected angles.

“It’s quite an honor to be recognized alongside incredible activists who do and have done such critical work in New York,” Yuhico said.

Yuhico manages the Teen Center at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) of The New York Public Library (NYPL), the nation’s largest public library system, serving the position as the Managing Librarian for Young Adult Services. Her responsibilities include managing the Teen Center and ensuring that her team is supported to provide the best possible library service. The Teen Center has many amenities including a recording studio, media lab, study rooms, a robust young adult materials collection, and a dedicated library staff.

“I firmly believe that young people have the right to resources, public space, and access to services and information,” Yuhico says. “Being a librarian that champions service, access, and resources for young people anywhere is my ongoing career goal.”

Yuhico learned skills through the Distance Learning Program with the College of Communication and Information (CCI), that she was able to use in her professional career during the height of the COVID19 pandemic. “Taking online classes both asynchronously and synchronously was an unexpected boon to my ability to adapt to and create new workflows so that my team and I could meet the needs of our virtual patrons,” Yuhico says.
