From November 7-8, Information Technology (IT) Student Jennifer Sterling attended the International Radio & Television Society Foundation (IRTS) Multicultural Career Workshop in New York City.
“Opportunities to travel, explore my career path, and connect with like-minded students from across the country are rare,” Sterling said. “Being able to take time away from classes and work to focus on my future felt like an immense privilege, one I don’t take for granted.”
IRTS is an organization dedicated to all aspects of electronic media, with a mission to build future media leaders in the industry. The multicultural career workshop is one of the opportunities IRTS hosts which supports college students by offering key industry insights, professional development resources, and networking opportunities.
During the two-day workshop, Sterling attended panels, listened to guest speakers, engaged in Q&A sessions, and met with recruiters and representatives from a variety of media companies.
Leading up to the process, Sterling underwent a competitive application process to secure her spot, where IRTS sought diverse and exceptional students with high potential. Her motivation came from a desire to connect with new companies and gain insights into paths for future success.
Reflecting on her experience, Sterling shared that her biggest takeaway was discovering how IT intersects with the media industry. She said she gained a deeper understanding of how her skills in data and technology could be leveraged to modernize and streamline processes across various fields.
“I’m incredibly thankful to IRTS and grateful to have connected with students who share my aspirations,” Sterling said. “It’s made the world feel a little smaller, more welcoming, and infinitely more inspiring.”
