What began as an opportunity to learn alongside higher education leaders from across the country has become a source of new ideas for the future of Florida State University’s School of Communication. After completing the 2026 Scripps Howard Leadership Academy, Dr. Patrick Merle reflected on the experience and the lessons he hopes to bring back to FSU.
Throughout the weeklong academy in June 2026, Merle joined communication and journalism leaders from institutions across the country in discussions focused on the evolving landscape of higher education and academic leadership.
“We rarely have the opportunity as academic leaders to slow down and think about what we do, what we can do differently, and what we can start,” he said.
“It was exciting and wonderful to be surrounded by people who face similar challenges and can easily relate to what I do. It was as if we were back in graduate school in some ways, challenging ourselves so we can all gain from one another.”
Discussions and workshops focused on research, budget management, as well as team performance optimization.
Merle said the experience has already inspired new ideas that he plans to share with the School of Communication faculty and students in the coming weeks and months. These projects will be focused on interdisciplinary research, industry partnerships, as well as student engagement.
“As the school director, one of my goals is to look for opportunities so our school can continue to grow,” he said. “We are privileged to have staff, faculty, and students who are always ready to challenge themselves to move forward.”
