Cameron Bickley, a Digital Media Production student, takes his skills from the classroom to the Black Student Union (BSU) on campus. Bickley, a student veteran of the United States Air Force and native of Wetumpka, Alabama, serves as the Vice President of the Black Student Union, helping to bring students a home away from home.
The Black Student Union is a Student Government agency focused on empowering Black student life on campus and giving students a form of identity and social life.
As Vice President, Bickley boosts morale, cultivates dynamic team-building, and executes programming for students on campus.
Bickley utilizes his digital media production skills to film promotional material and recapture BSU programming for social media through videography and photography. He also collaborates with BSU historians to share ideas, approve content, and critique social and promotional material for the Black Student Union.
“I really do think us both having a digital media production background and being in the same major really did help us to up BSU’s video content game,” Bickley said. “Having that background knowledge of how to make a good video, how to shoot the audio, and what makes a good video. I think it really benefits the page.”
Bickley’s enthusiasm for digital media production and enhancing Black student life on campus helps bridge gaps between media and identity through community storytelling. While Black students make up almost 9% of the student body, Bickley emphasizes the importance of highlighting their stories and experiences in culturally positive and uplifting ways.
