Emily Peters SCOM Alumna Discusses Her Roles in Broadcasting

Emily Peters, a Media Communication Studies alumna, previously, she served as Promotions Producer at the Sinclair Broadcast group full-time. As a Promotions Producer, she worked at increasing audience engagement for a variety of media platforms.

Peters began her broadcast career at Seminole Productions, where she developed her skills as both a sideline reporter and a graphics operator for shows with ESPN’s ACC Network, ACC Network Extra, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+.

“The prep work is different but extremely important in both roles. I want to have graphics ready for every situation as a technician and I want to know my stories inside and out as a reporter. I’m watching the game very intently in both roles and listening carefully to what the announcers are emphasizing,” Peters said.

Through these roles, she has become a “complete storyteller,” having the awareness of how the visual aspect of what is happening on camera will turn out while also speaking as a reporter.

“I tell stories when the game permits, I look for trends, I notice what is going on in both dugouts, I observe the crowd. I listen to what the announcers are saying and when I have graphics or stories to support their thoughts, I pitch them to my producer,” Peters said.

On the sidelines, Peters keeps consistent communication with the producer before the game to discuss details of her stories. Peters mentioned how “it’s so important that we’re all on the same page with 99% of things before we go live.” Keeping this team dynamic in mind is essential while having to manage listening to the play-by-play analyst and color analyst simultaneously in her headset.

These experiences ultimately inspired Peters to become the host and producer of her own podcast, the Tribe Check.

“It seemed like a fantastic way for me to practice my craft and find my voice as a reporter, become more comfortable speaking on-camera, exercise my storytelling muscle, and connect with Florida State fans in a new way,” said Peters.

Similar to Peter’s reporting role, podcasting takes careful planning, especially with the added factor of preparing for guests. Initially, Tribe Check was denied by a news station but after speaking with the owner/founder of NoleGameday, Logan Robinson, she was able to sell her idea, giving her the spark she needed to launch the podcast.

From her beginnings at Seminole Productions to her current roles, Emily Peters represents versatility in her abilities both behind the scenes and on camera.
