Long-time faculty member Gary Heald assumed the role of director of Florida State University’s School of Communication effective July 1. The school is part of the College of Communication and Information.
Heald, Theodore Clevenger Professor Emeritus, was a Florida State faculty member for nearly 34 years, serving in several capacities for the school before his retirement as associate dean of the College of Communication & Information in June 2013. He returned to the classroom last spring and now resumes an active role as an administrator.
“I am very fortunate to be working with the School of Communication faculty, staff and students,” Heald said. “I know that 2014-15 is going to be a busy academic year, but it is also going to be an exciting time to be in the College of Communication and Information.”
Throughout his tenure, Heald managed finance, budgeting and academic affairs, and served as interim dean for the college, while teaching courses in health communication, computer applications and statistical methods.
“Gary has the understanding, experience, leadership and vision to help lead the School of Communication to even more success,” Larry Dennis, dean of the College of Communication & Information, said. “I am delighted that he was willing to take this on.”
Heald received his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech in 1970 and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in communication at Michigan State University.
Ulla Sypher, who served as interim director during the last academic year, will resume her previous role as assistant director of the school.
