Communication Intern

DOH’s Office of Communications is looking for two unpaid interns who are dynamic, creative, proactive problem solvers with exceptional communication skills and knowledge of all current computer software. While the internships do not offer a salary, interns will gain first-hand experience working in a state communications office representing over 17,000 employees. The internship will provide an opportunity to develop work samples for a personal portfolio and meet internship requirements for college credit.

What Experience You Will Take Home With You:
• Write media-targeted feature articles for DOH’s online newsroom and offer innovative ideas for upcoming articles;
• Interact with high-level subject matter experts for program information and resources, quote drafting, and finalizing articles;
• Draft creative and stand-out content for DOH’s social media networks (Facebook, Twitter and You Tube);
• Assist with press release writing, editing and distribution for the media;
• Develop full-scale ideas for PSAs, interviews and YouTube videos;
• Participate and excel in strategic planning meetings;
• Assist with answering phones and recording thorough media information and inquiries;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

What We Expect from You:
• Minimum of 20 hours per week with a relatively consistent schedule;
• Professional performance in terms of conduct, timeliness and dress code that treats the internship as seriously as a job;
• Ability to speak clearly and confidently to various audiences via phone and email, such as press, public and DOH subject matter experts;
• Natural talent for both the well written and well spoken word;
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and be assertive in carrying out projects from beginning to end;
• Ability to multi-task as well as prioritize projects;
• Capability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment;
• Enthusiasm for the fields of media relations, public relations, marketing and communications.

Additional Skills Desired:
• Media/Communications and Marketing majors preferred; with Media, Writing and Editing majors highly considered;
• Knowledge of AP Style and strong writing/editing skills with minimal errors;
• In-depth knowledge of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube;
• Ability to converse with media professionals.
