Internship — Athens-Clarke County Library Heritage Room (Athens, GA)


The Heritage Room at the Athens-Clarke County Library in Athens, Georgia seeks a highly-motivated, responsible library school student or recent graduate to serve as processing intern for our backlog of archival materials. This is a part-time, unpaid internship, 8-10 hours per work week for 12 weeks, beginning February 3, 2014. Students with a focus in archival studies and/or an interest in local history are strongly encouraged to apply


The Heritage Room is the archives and special collections arm of the Athens-Clarke County Library. In support of the Athens Regional Library’s mission to serve the community and region as a resource center, the Heritage Room collects materials on the business, economic, social, cultural, and natural history, politics and government, geology, archaeology, and geography of the local area, Georgia and the South. The Heritage Room seeks to serve serious students of Georgia history, local history and genealogy of all ages, from the beginner to the experienced researcher


The intern will assist the Heritage Room Librarian in inventorying and processing collections of 20th century personal papers and administrative records according to archival principals, with re-housing in archival enclosures. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in accessioning and inventorying collections, handling fragile objects, evaluating the condition of objects for conservation and preservation and collection processing. The intern may assist with reference inquiries, the Library’s digitization project and other tasks as assigned. Assignments will vary according to the individual’s skill set and interests.


The intern should be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an MLS/MLIS program at an ALA-accredited university. Prior archival processing experience preferred but not required. Candidates must have good communication skills, be detail-oriented, be able to work independently, and be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Preference will be given to candidates completing the internship for course credit.
