Internship — Athens-Clarke Couny Library (Athens, GA)

DESCRIPTION
The Heritage Room at the Athens-Clarke County Library in Athens, Georgia seeks highly-motivated, responsible applicants for TWO fall semester internship/fieldwork opportunities, described below. These are part-time, unpaid internships, semester-long internships beginning August 17, 2015. Preference will be given to candidates completing the internship for course credit. Interns will complete a total of between 120-150 hours of work, dependent upon the requirements for academic course credit. Students with a focus in archival studies, history, public history, or library and information science are strongly encouraged to apply.

Digitization Intern: the Digitization Intern will assist the Heritage Room Librarian in capturing images from microfilm and original documents, editing images, and recording descriptive metadata. The successful candidate will learn practical applications of metadata standards and schemas, and technical requirements for making digital files publicly accessible. Assignments will vary according to the individual’s skill set and interests, and the intern may assist with other tasks as assigned. All equipment and training will be provided by the Heritage Room, where all work will be performed.

Processing Intern: the Processing Intern will assist the Heritage Room Librarian in accessioning, inventorying and processing collections of 20th century personal papers and administrative records according to archival principals, with re-housing in archival enclosures. The successful candidate will gain experience in handling fragile objects, collection arrangement and description, and evaluating materials for preservation and/or conservation treatment. The intern may assist with reference inquiries and other tasks as assigned. Assignments will vary according to the individual’s skill set and interests. All equipment and training will be provided by the Heritage Room, where all work will be performed.

ABOUT THE HERITAGE ROOM
The Heritage Room is the archives and special collections arm of the Athens-Clarke County Library. In support of the Athens Regional Library’s mission to serve the community and region as a resource center, the Heritage Room collects materials on the business, economic, social, cultural, and natural history, politics and government, geology, archaeology, and geography of the local area, Georgia and the South. The Heritage Room seeks to serve serious students of Georgia history, local history and genealogy of all ages, from the beginner to the experienced researcher.

QUALIFICATIONS
The intern should be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in the aforementioned fields of study. The successful candidate will have experience with the general operation of digital scanners and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented, able to work independently, have fine manual dexterity, strong written and verbal communication skills, and be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Experience using microfilm preferred but not required.
