Availability:
Hours: Up to 20 hours per week, mainly within 9AM-5PM Monday–Friday time period, but with the possibility of some weekend hours.

Broad Functions:
The Steven & Dorothea Green Library at Florida International University seeks service-oriented, self-motivated individuals for a complete experience in a large academic library setting. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to experience most aspects of an academic librarian at a large research institution. A background in government resources is not required; this is an ideal opportunity for an FSU iSchool student residing in South Florida to acquire hand-on academic experience. Reporting to the Head of the Government Resources and Information Department, interns may have the opportunity to gain experience in reference services, instruction assistance, development of instructional materials, cataloging, and maintenance of multiple government depositories and other specialized collections.
Specific Duties:
Duties will fall into three basic categories, with other duties, and projects as assigned.
Patron Services and Instruction, including
- Working at the government resources and information desk
- Developing and updating education materials such as LibGuides
- Preparing supporting materials for course-integrated instruction sessions
Collection Development Responsibilities, including
- Identify current topics for the inclusion of materials in FIU’s digital repository
- Identify print and digital resources for inclusion in various collections using vendor software
Cataloging and Collection Maintenance Responsibilities, including
- Copy cataloging
- Weeding
- Updating classification scheme
- Metadata clean-up
- Inventorying uncataloged resources
Qualifications:
All applicants must be enrolled in a master’s degree program in library/information science. In addition, the successful candidate must have the ability to manage and prioritize their workload and must be able to work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
Other requirements include:
- Experience searching online databases
- Flexibility, accuracy, and attention to detail in work
Preference will be given to applicants with coursework in the following subjects:
- Reference and research
- Cataloging
- Government Documents
