Tallahassee Museum Collections & Exhibits Internship Program
The internship program in the Collections & Exhibits Department offers undergraduate and graduate college students hands-on experience in managing museum collections and behind-the-scenes experience in the production and maintenance of exhibits.
Interns will be trained in museum collections care and management. They will assist in the daily management of the collection records and in ongoing projects related to their creation and accuracy. These duties include:
- Monitoring temperature and humidity in collections storage and exhibit galleries
- Preparation of database for online access including adding records and correcting entries
- Learning and practicing correct methods for handling artifacts
- Conducting inventories of objects on exhibit and in storage, including updating location information in database
- Practicing preventive conservation including simple cleaning
- Preparing digital photographs and scans of collections objects
- Completing original or supplemental cataloging
- Marking objects
Interns may have the opportunity to:
- Conduct individual projects designed to augment information about objects in the collection or to document a topic related to a permanent or future exhibit. Research projects are assigned based on the departmental priorities and the intern’s interests, university or college requirements, and major course of
- Respond to information requests
- Process incoming and outgoing loan materials (producing condition reports; assisting in packing and unpacking objects)
- Participate in exhibit planning, installation, and maintenance (dependent on the schedule)
Internships can be scheduled for one term or more. Full- and part-time internships can be arranged (minimum 6 hours a week). Interns will complete the standard museum volunteer training (usually scheduled on a Saturday) and schedule their regular hours during the week, M-F 9 to 5. A work shift should be at least 3 hours. Specific schedules are arranged individually.
