Job Description | FSU Student Internship

 

Background

The LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System enriches the community by inspiring a love of reading, providing a dynamic resource for intellectual, creative and recreational pursuits, and enabling residents to live a life of learning. The library is a department of the Leon County government and serves a population of 287,000 people. It is composed of the LeRoy Collins Main Library, six branch libraries and Outreach Services.

 

Located at the LeRoy Collins Main Library, the Adult Services area is composed of Reference, Technology and Media, and Interlibrary loan. Its Reference staff serves a diverse adult population, providing research services, technology assistance, social media outreach, programming and reader’s advisory services.

 

Tasks

The person in this position will gain valuable general adult reference experience in a public library setting. The Reference Intern assists with a variety of duties including collection maintenance, moderating book clubs and participating in staff training. In this position, Interns strengthen their customer service skills and learn about best practices in a medium size public library setting. Interns are welcome to propose their own project ideas.

 

Specific tasks:

The Intern’s tasks may include the following:

  • Assisting/shadowing on the adult reference desk
  • Attending staff meetings
  • Participating in providing indirect services such as pulling items on the send list, managing Baker & Taylor rental items and maintaining statistics
  • Developing engaging book displays
  • Assisting with moderating book club meetings
  • Touring and shadowing at branch locations and various service areas at the Main Library
  • Participating in webinars and other staff training
  • Weeding and other collection maintenance activities
  • Assisting with Interlibrary loan duties
  • Providing technology training to the public
  • Answering reference questions sent via email and postal mail
  • Assisting with special projects in Adult Services
  • Assisting with projects in other service areas at the Main Library

 

Student Intern Hours

The Intern’s hours will be scheduled during the library’s open hours, which are Sunday 1:00-6:00, Monday through Thursday 10:00-9:00, Friday 10:00-6:00 and Saturday 10:00-5:00. Shifts will typically be scheduled during the weekdays 10:00-6:00 with the possibility of occasional weekend hours as needed for programming and other special events.

 

Skills Needed

Ideally, an Intern must have the following skills:

  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Basic customer service skills
  • The ability to work independently
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
