Job Summary

The United States Forest Service (USFS), Daniel Boone National Forest (DBNF) is seeking a graduate or post graduate intern to create a catalog guide for a collection of historic documents. To meet federal requirements for digitizing all paper records for the National Archives, the DBNF is seeking a student with a strong understanding of library cataloging to develop a clear, user-friendly cataloging guide. This guide will enable our team to accurately label and scan legal documents, maps, letters, and other materials so they can be easily searched and made accessible to researchers in the future.

The student can complete this work remotely, and their cataloging process will form the foundation for our entire digitization effort. Their contribution will play a key role in preserving and sharing the forest’s historic records.

This project would give an intern a real-world opportunity to do a project that is both meaningful to the agency but also meaningful to the intern who has an interest in the subject.

Availability Open until filled.

This is a two semester internship: Intern will work August 2026 – April 2027.

Compensation non-paid internship

Schedule This internship is flexible – the intern works on their own schedule. All that is asked is that the intern commit to a maximum of 10 hours per week (they can work more if they choose but do not have to).

Duties

· Create a user’s guide to catalog historic documents and maps.

· Make recommendations on best practices for cataloging documents.

· Complete projects as assigned.

· Meet weekly via Microsoft Teams with supervisor.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

· Must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent program in the United States, or have graduated from an MLIS program within the past year and be a U.S. resident.

· Demonstrated effective communication skills.

· Must have a computer and reliable Internet service.

Preferred Qualifications

· Coursework or experience in reference/research services.

· Ability to evaluate, understand, refer, and respond to research questions.

· Strong commitment to service.
