Public Media Journalism Summer 2023 Internship (Volunteer) @ WFSU

WFSU Public Media is the NPR-PBS affiliate for North Florida and South Georgia. WFSU-FM’s news internship program is open to undergrad and graduate students. This internship is for students pursuing careers in journalism. The ideal candidate will demonstrate intellectual curiosity about the issues and people influencing the region; including how national stories can be told through local angles.

The internship will focus heavily on local government, and issues of regional importance. WFSU interns are responsible for reporting, writing, editing and producing their own stories under the supervision of the News Director and Assignment Editor. Previous interns have had their work shared across the 12-member station Florida Public Media network, along with NPR. A final project is required to be completed by all interns. This project marks the culmination of the learning experience and is designed to act as a portfolio project for students. The project can be in the form of a digital, video, audio, photo, podcast or other mediums approved by the News Director and/or Assistant News Director. On-air experience is not necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the creation and production of news reports
  • Collaborate with additional content producers as needed
  • Participate in editorial meetings with content teams
  • Pitch and produce news and feature stories and other projects as assigned

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written—the ability to write a script/story that moves the narrative forward; ability to write in various styles to accommodate production needs
  • Must be able to research and fact-check and make proper citations/credit.
  • Ability to interview and report on subjects and issues.
  • Ability to produce audio, digital and broadcast content that clearly communicates key themes and concepts through photos, video (short and long-form) galleries, social media and other forms.
  • Have a collaborative mindset
  • Have a journalism mindset

Position Requirements:

  • Some knowledge of audio and video recording equipment and editing software
  • Ability to brainstorm new ideas and find new angles on a variety of topics.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills
  • Curiosity

Some prior courses, and experience in basic newswriting and reporting is required. Students are asked to dedicate at least two days a week (Monday/Wednesday; Tuesday/Thursday, etc.) for this internship. Students are able to earn academic credit and we will work with your advisors to make sure you meet your internship requirements.

The deadline to apply is April 14th at 5 p.m.   The internship will run concurrent to the academic calendars of Florida A&M and Florida State Universities. Students are welcome to request an extension of their internship upon successful completion.
