Position Focus Statement
The social media manager is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive digital engagement strategy that showcases and promotes ITS services and initiatives across multiple social platforms. Working as part of the Integrated Communications team within Information Technology Services (ITS) department, the social media manager creates and schedules platform-specific content, monitors community interactions, and utilizes analytics to effectively connect with the FSU community. This employee works closely with the Integrated Communications team to promote specific campaigns, and across the department to highlight the many ways technology is being used at FSU to enhance the student and employee experience. The candidate will have a thorough understanding of social media strategy, community management, and digital trends, along with solid experience in content creation and audience engagement analytics.
Why is a Graduate Assistant required for this role instead of a standard intern?
A graduate assistant is required for the social media manager role because the position demands a high degree of strategic oversight, crisis-communication awareness, and professional maturity that exceeds the capabilities of a standard undergraduate intern. Managing the official social media channels for a major university’s information technology department involves protecting the institution’s digital reputation, navigating sensitive communication issues during technical outages, and maintaining strict alignment with university branding guidelines. While a standard intern typically focuses on basic content posting and routine engagement under close supervision, a graduate assistant possesses the advanced analytical skills and prior experience necessary to operate (almost) autonomously, make high-level editorial decisions, and direct data-driven communication strategies.
What responsibilities or projects will this GA complete that require graduate-level knowledge or skills?
The responsibilities of this position rely on graduate-level knowledge to transform raw technical data and department initiatives into digital marketing campaigns. The assistant is responsible for working with the graphic designer and marketing associate graduate assistantships to develop comprehensive cross-channel social media strategies and leveraging advanced analytics tools to interpret performance metrics and optimize reach. This role requires the ability to communicate complex IT concepts into highly engaging, accessible, and accurate short-form content for audiences. The assistant must collaborate directly with full-time IT project managers and marketing professionals to align social media efforts with broader institutional goals, requiring an advanced understanding of digital communication theory and public relations.
What outcomes or deliverables do you expect this GA to produce by the end of the semester?
During the semester, the graduate student will assist in updating the 2026–2027 social media plan and help refine best practices across all platforms. The role will contribute to increasing followers and engagement by supporting content strategy and performance tracking. The student will also expand video production efforts for social media and help ensure that all published content remains compliant with ADA accessibility standards. These outcomes will strengthen the consistency, reach, and accessibility of our social media channels.
