Assistant Librarian

Darlington School in Rome, GA is currently seeking a part-time assistant librarian for the Joanne G. Yancey (Pre-K through 8th grade) library. The librarian will maintain the Pre-K through 2nd grade collection, teach weekly library classes to those grades, work collaboratively with teachers to integrate information literacy instruction into their curriculum, and partner with the other librarian to offer a comprehensive Pre-K through 8th grade library program.

The librarian’s primary responsibilities will be instruction, collection development and cataloging, collection maintenance, patron services, and library promotion. This position requires a person committed to maintaining a successful primary grades library program to support Darlington’s mission to “empower students to learn with passion, act with integrity and serve with respect.”

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching
Plans and teaches regular, fixed library classes (including instruction in using the library, storytime, and book checkout) to Pre-K through 2nd grade students.
Collaborates with Pre-K through 2nd grade classroom teachers to integrate information literacy instruction into core curriculum

Patron Services
Provides readers’ advisory to students.
Supervises students and maintains an appropriate atmosphere conducive to active learning as well as quiet study and reading

Collection Development/Cataloging
Reads professional reviews and lists and maintains a high level of familiarity with current children’s literature
Selects and purchases books according to the criteria outlined in the Darlington Library Services’ Collection Development Policy
Uses the automated cataloging system in Darlington’s OPAC to catalog new materials
Targets subject areas in need of growth in the library collection and weeds materials to help maintain balance in the collection

Circulation
Issues overdue notices and contacts students’ teachers and parents when necessary to retrieve materials
Checks in materials, reshelves, and maintains correct order of returned materials

Library Promotion and Public Relations
Creates displays related to curriculum, general interest, or special events
Stages programs that involve students and faculty in library activities
Reads and promotes new titles in a variety of genres
Qualifications and Requirements

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited University (required)
  • Teaching experience, particularly in the primary grades (preferred)
  • Storytelling/public performance experience (preferred)
  • Respect for and genuine enjoyment of children
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Applications
  • Experience with Apple laptop and tablet devices (with Mac iOS)
  • Familiarity with Follett Destiny library automation software
  • Ability to work independently and with faculty, administrators, and volunteers
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and self-motivation
  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written
  • High level of technology intuitiveness
  • Patience, tact, enthusiasm, good sense of humor
  • Desire to help others
