District Legislative Assistant (District 17)

General Summary

This position assists the Senator and staff with a variety of administrative, public relations, and communication functions. A basic understanding of the policies, procedures, and operating practices of the Florida Legislature is preferred. Proficiency in timely, accurate, and district-relevant content writing for all social media platforms, weekly newsletters, and responses to constituent inquiries is required. This position may involve travel to Tallahassee during committee weeks, special sessions, and legislative session.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Creates effective messaging to constituents through all communication platforms.
  • Serves as a responsive liaison for constituents with a focus on accurate and timelycommunication.
  • Responds to inquiries by seeking solutions to problems or assisting in the communication withappropriate State agencies.
  • Performs research to gather and assemble information for drafting of bills, speeches, or specialreports and legislative updates.
  • Assists in maintaining an active constituent listserv.
  • Attends various local functions and meetings to gather information, or on behalf of theSenator, as a representative of the staff.
  • Formulates replies to correspondence in draft or final form depending on the complexity of theissue.
  • Advises Senator of issues and projects in the district that require involvement in order tobetter serve the district.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in generating relevant content for daily social media and weekly newsletters is required.
  • Knowledge of Florida laws, the legislative and political processes, and protocol is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and grammatically correct verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to review work for accuracy and quality of content.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the demands of the public, press, and lobbyists.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, judgment, and professionalism at all times.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and to contribute to the effective internalfunctioning of the office(s).
  • Ability to travel within the district and may involve travel to Tallahassee if needed.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, political science, public administration or related field from an accredited college or university and one year of administrative experience is preferred.

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for the one year of requiredexperience.

*Professional or non-professional administrative experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Salary

Commensurate with experience.
