Information Technology Specialist (Staff Associate for IT Operations) @ NSF

This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Director, Directorate for Social, Behavior and Economic Sciences (SBE), National Science Foundation (NSF). The Directorate, responsible for research and education in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences, consists of three divisions and the Office of the Assistant Director.

Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to independently manage the directorate’s computer and information technology environment including oversight of IT equipment and software planning, implementation, and maintenance. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for developing and maintaining Directorate-level SharePoint sites. Specifically:

  • Plans and directs the Directorate computer support program within the framework of legislation, agency policies, missions, objectives, and resources.
  • Provides oversight and management of the Directorate’s computer systems. Serves as team leader for Directorate-wide systems development projects.
  • Provides problem-solving solutions and alternatives to management.
  • Maintains security and accountability of SBE desktops, laptops, Macs, and application software.
  • Identifies critical issues of potential concern, performs required research to determine policies and practices impacting the issues, and presents alternatives, including recommended resolution. Develops strategies and plans for the implementation of the approved solutions.
  • Serves as SBE’s principal representative to the Division of Information Systems (DIS) with responsibility for speaking for the Front Office and staff offices on all information technology matters.
  • Conducts continuing review of office operating procedures and new developments in information technology.
  • Provides expert technical advice to the Front Office, staff offices, and other client offices regarding the realm of information technology (hardware, software, networking, middleware, etc.) available to support sensitive and demanding information processing needs for the Directorate.
  • Provides Directorate-wide training on technical matters related to IT infrastructure and security. Manages information dissemination on the Web, and advises staff office personnel in the preparation of Web pages.
  • Prepares presentations using a variety of technology and media, including still images, video, audio, and animations. Preparation may require the creation of original images, video, audio and animations, or editing existing media for inclusion in presentations.
  • Performs IT field research and collaborates with external field experts from the private sector and academia.
  • Creates an IT budget for each fiscal year and makes sound recommendations to increase automation of SBE operations and regarding all information technology equipment purchases within the directorate.
  • Serves as the Directorates expert on networking, wireless networking, teleconferencing, IT infrastructure, and security.
