Salary:  $37,862 annually; $1,456 bi-weekly + benefits.  Occasional weekends and evenings.  Some in-state and out of state travel (25% to 50%).

Minimum qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Marine Science, Biology or another related field

Preferred qualifications: Two (2) years of experience in marketing, communications or outreach

 

This position is fully funded by a Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) grant.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Division of Marine Fisheries Management is seeking a creative, highly-motivated individual to develop and coordinate statewide marketing, communications and outreach initiatives designed to reach current and future saltwater recreational anglers with information on the federal Sport Fish Restoration (SFR) program, SFR-funded projects in Florida, saltwater fishing opportunities and ways to help conserve Florida’s marine fisheries.

 

This position also oversees Catch a Florida Memory saltwater angler recognition programs which encourage anglers to target a variety of saltwater species, helping reduce pressure on the most commonly sought-after catches.

 

The ideal candidate is skilled in marketing and communications techniques and is professional, energetic, capable of handling multiple projects and deadlines, and is familiar with Florida’s vast saltwater fishing opportunities.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Marketing, Communications and Angler Outreach:

  • Develops, implements and evaluates innovative and effective ways to convey information to current and future saltwater anglers and encourage marine resource stewardship.
  • Uses creative, relevant content to engage the target audience, increase awareness of Sportfish Restoration Program (SFR) and SFR-funded programs, and promote fisheries conservation.
  • Creates articles, brochures, publications, graphics, ads, flyers, signage, displays, webpages, videos, social media posts, communication campaigns, lesson plans, educational modules and other effective ways to reach substantial numbers of current and future anglers.
  • Develops and purchases Sport Fish Restoration promotional products.
  • Interacts with saltwater recreational anglers through direct contact at fishing expos, boat shows, fishing seminars, fishing tournaments, fishing-related festivals, piers, boat ramps, meetings of fishing organizations, and other events as needed.
  • Coordinates with other DMFM staff as well as the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) to gather information obtained from marine fisheries research and management efforts for use in various marketing and outreach materials about marine fisheries and SFR.
  • Communicates with other DMFM staff to provide and disseminate current marine fisheries information obtained from external stakeholders.  This informatino can be used to identify management needs and help determine support of proposed management actions.

 

Catch a Florida Memory Program:

  • Coordinates all aspects of Catch a Florida Memory saltwater angler recognition programs.
  • Oversees program budget and purchases program materials.
  • Creates print, web/video, and digital communications about the program.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates effective marketing and communication strategies to encourage program awareness, participation and marine resource stewardship.
  • Coordinates website updates, Facebook posts and social media campaigns.
  • Cultivates and enhances program partnerships.
  • Responds to catch submissions and inquiries via the program website and email inbox.
  • Maintains data on programs, conducts program evaluations and implements programmatic changes based on findings.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of marketing and communications principles and techniques;
  • Knowledge of program planning and evaluation techniques;
  • Knowledge of personal computers and related software (Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Excel, Access, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.);
  • Knowledge of website development and graphic design techniques;
  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and organize marine resources (especially fisheries) information into various formats for a variety of audiences;
  • Ability to conduct fact finding research and utilize problem solving techniques;
  • Knowledge of saltwater fishing (techniques, gear and experience);
  • Ability to identify the saltwater fish species most targeted by anglers;
  • Effective communication skills (public speaking, writing and personal interaction);
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, policies regulations, and procedures relating to program activities;
  • Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and complete work assignments;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of people;
  • Must be able to pass a background check (within three months of being hired);
  • Ability to safely tow vehicles (trailers and boats);
  • Ability to lift equipment and supplies weighing 40 pounds or more to accomplish the duties of this position;
  • Must be willing and able to travel and work overtime hours, including some weekends, weeknights and holidays.
