Metadata and Music Librarian @ The Florida International University Libraries

The Florida International University Libraries seek an energetic and service-oriented full-time Cataloging and Music Librarian. This position, located at the Steven and Dorothea Green Library in Miami, reports  to the Head of the Cataloging Department. The cataloging responsibilities will focus on original and complex copy cataloging of music resources in all formats, Spanish language materials, and providing direct supervision and guidance to one full-time cataloging staff member.  This position will also serve as liaison to the School of Music. In this role, the librarian will assess and select music resources, maintain the currency of the music collection by identifying gaps and weeding as necessary, and assist the School’s faculty and students’ reference needs through resource guides and instruction.

FIU catalogers work in a statewide-shared bibliographic environment, currently using Ex Libris’ cloud-based library services platform, Alma. Librarians are expected to participate in professional development, research, and service activities to meet the Libraries and University’s requirements for promotion. This position will also be expected to serve on Libraries and University committees, task forces and teams, as appropriate, as well as network and actively participate in local, regional, and national organizations regarding library issues and music cataloging.

Required Qualifications:

•             Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent

•             Minimum two years post-MLS professional cataloging experience using OCLC Connexion and a library management system, adhering to AACR2r, RDA, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and MARC21 formats and standards

•             Familiarity with authority control principles

•             Minimum two years’ experience cataloging Spanish language materials and music materials, including scores and music recordings, following Music Library Association’s Best Practices

•             Music subject expertise and experience with music research tools

•             Excellent analytical, time management, and problem-solving skills

•             Effective oral and written communication, including ability to develop clear written procedures to assist with staff training

•             Ability to adapt to changing standards and evolving work-related expectations in a dynamic working environment

•             Fluency in Spanish

Desired Qualifications:

•             Knowledge of non-MARC metadata formats, standards and schemas

•             Experience working in a digital library

•             Professional flexibility to operate between traditional MARC-based systems and metadata for a digital library environment

•             Knowledge of NACO/SACO authority control work

•             Excellent interpersonal communication and organization skills, including project management

•             Ability to take initiative, work accurately, and follow through effectively and efficiently with all issues and tasks

•             Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a culturally diverse environment

•             Skill in standard office software, such as Word and Excel

Rank/Salary: Non-tenured faculty status; rank and salary are competitive based on qualifications and experience.
