Description
The Pitts Theology Library announces an opening for a Reference and Systems Librarian to begin on or before June 1, 2011. One of Emory University’s six instructional libraries, Pitts supports the programs of the Candler School of Theology and the university’s doctoral programs in religion. Its collections include over 550,000 volumes, and its staff of 15 supports vigorous programs in archives, special collections and digital imaging. Planning for a new library facility is underway. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a member of the library’s reference staff and have significant responsibility for library systems. The reference team provides orientation for all new students, works with faculty to develop and deliver library instruction and tutorials tailored to specific classes, and supplies ongoing research assistance to all patrons. Some weekend and/or evening hours may be expected. The electronic resources component of the job includes support for this library’s use of our integrated library system (ILS) and related systems, development of locally produced digital resources (e.g., the Digital Image Archive) and instructional activities related to the library’s Information Literacy initiative. In all its efforts, the Pitts Library strives to determine innovative and appropriate applications of technology to improve library services and increase access to resources.
Required Qualifications
ALA-accredited MLS or doctoral study in theology; excellent oral and written communication skills; commitment to public service and to theological education; experience with library systems and electronic resources; strong organizational skills; demonstrated creativity and/or initiative in performing duties; and ability to work collaboratively with other staff on inter-departmental projects.
Preferred Qualifications
Specialized knowledge in theological or religious studies; familiarity with United Methodist publications, polity and history; technical proficiency and interest in new technologies for teaching, learning and content provision; teaching proficiency and experience; involvement in library, scholarly and/or pastoral associations (e.g., ATLA, ALA, SBL); graduate degree in theology; foreign-language expertise.
