Job Title: Teen Services Librarian
General Description:
The Ladies Improvement Association founded the Delray Beach Public Library in 1913. In 1938 the Delray Beach Public Library Association became a not-for-profit corporation to provide a public library in Delray Beach. Since 1950, our patrons have received library service through a successful public/private partnership between the City of Delray Beach and the Library Association. The City of Delray Beach has provided a large percentage of the annual operating budget and the Library Association has raised capital funds.
The Delray Beach Public Library exists to enrich the lives of the individuals of Delray Beach’s diverse communities by creating and sustaining superior public library services through responsive staff, dynamic collections, appropriate technology, effective programming and access to global information. The Teen Services Librarian is the lead librarian providing access to excellent library resources, programs and services, technologies and community connections to the teen population ranging from 13 to 18. As an integral staff member of the Information Services team the Teen Services Librarian is expected to liaise with the Children’s Services department to develop an effective transition for youth to move from Children’s Services/Tween to Teen Services. This position demands an innovative and compassionate mentor who models behavior which Teens can emulate including sound project management skills, effective communication and a passion for reading and learning. This position requires a high level of technology proficiency including the ability to explore new technologies and demonstrate their application effectively. The Teen Services Librarian is responsible for a teens services collection and program budget with a focus of continuous improvement. Working as a part of the Information Services department the Teen Services Librarian works on the Information Services desk, develops, and delivers technology classes and participates in collection management.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Reports to the Head, Information Services, the Teen Services is a vital team player in the department and is an effective reference librarian serving the public on the public service desk, online, on the phone, and in the community and demonstrates the initiative to bring new programming ideas to the Department Head and the Information Services team.
· Develops and delivers relevant programing for Teens including a robust summer reading schedule.
· Develops and delivers technology curricula and workshops to teens and adults demonstrating effective training skills to lead workshops.
· Budgets for Teen collections and programs and produces regular reports with analysis of use, challenges and opportunities for Head of Information Services and Executive Director.
· Extends teen services into the community by sustaining and developing new community partnerships.
· Serves as Mentor for Teen Advisory Board, managing and recruiting teen volunteers.
· Participates in the acquisition, retention, discarding or special handling of library materials.
· Active participant on Staff Technology Committee sharing knowledge and ideas.
· Active participant on Innovation and Excellence Staff Task Force to identify, pilot and execute initiatives to enhance library service.
· Other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills & Experience Requirements:
· Current MLS Graduate student pursuing a teen/youth services track.
· Master’s in Library Science preferred.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
· Demonstrated ability in time and project management including planning, successful execution and evaluation.
· Must excel in team-oriented work environment.
· Proven record of successful application of technology knowledge and skills.
· Passion for reading and ability to communicate this effectively to foster a lifelong love of reading.
· Self-motivated, self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
· Proficiency in both Windows and Mac operating systems preferred.
· Ability to develop and maintain excellent rapport, and cooperative and courteous relationships with supervisor, co-workers, officials, merchants, city representatives, partner organizations, and the general public.
· Bilingual in Creole or Spanish preferred.
· Ability to work Saturdays, Sundays, and full weekends.
· Ability to lift 25 pounds in the shifting and moving of library materials and equipment required. Ability to navigate stairs, kneel, bend, reach, stand for 1/2 hour, stretch and stoop in the maintenance of an orderly collection on the shelves required. Normal speech quality and normal hearing ability expected at level of 25 decibels through the speech frequency, aided or unaided, in order to efficiently serve the public. Ability to drive a car to perform various duties outside library building and ability to attend out-of-town meetings via commercial transportation.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
