The Career
Tell us about your job:
My job title is “DevOps Specialist” which means my primary responsibilities, on top of developing code with best practice, now include maintaining the process from end to end so that development, testing, and deployment are all done with the highest efficiency and as automated as possible. This includes version controlling our software, maintaining infrastructure as code, and optimizing our code environments as well with best practice for the highest performance as possible. You can say I have my head in “the clouds.”
What does your average day look like?
Eat and chat with some coworkers, dig into some code until lunch, rinse and repeat until dinner 🙂
How did your education prepare you for your career?
By giving me the necessary soft skills to be a professional, as well as giving me a broad range of topics in which to pick the ones I found most interesting.
How has working in your industry changed the way you look at the world?
Definitely–the cloud and the internet in general are moving very rapidly and expanding their reach (literally). I’m excited to be a part of it.
Who do you look to for inspiration?
Literally…Google, Amazon, and Microsoft…
How do you handle work-life balance?
By remembering that work is a means to an end, not my family.
What advice would you give yourself in college?
Get some certifications, its like…really fun to study for the stuff you like.
BUT also, don’t be afraid to work hard, you won’t look back and wish you had played more games in college.
