The Power of Young Alumni Giving, Featuring Walt Bower

Written by Hanya Noussier

At the College of Communication and Information (CCI), we believe in the transformative power of education and the important role that alumni play in shaping students’ futures. Our alumni’s dedication to giving back has significantly impacted the lives of current and future students. Our young alum Leadership Board member Walt Bower shares his personal story of how the generosity of others positively impacted his life and why he chooses to give back.

Walt Bower is a two-time graduate of Florida State University (FSU), holding both a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology (2008) and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies (2010). Over the years, Walt has honed his expertise by working in various technology roles, including financial services and multiple law firms.

As a student at FSU, Bower received scholarships from Bobby Bowden, Houston Blount, and the Louis Shores Scholarship. These played a crucial role in propelling his academic success and supporting his educational journey both during undergrad and while pursuing his master’s degree.

The joy of witnessing student success is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an alumni engaged with CCI,” Bower said. Having experienced the profound impact of higher education, he understands the importance of supporting students and being part of their success stories. Walt emphasizes the significance of research, internships, conferences, and other hands-on experiences in preparing students for the professional world.

Drawing from his journey as a student, Walt mentioned that Ebe Randeree would always stress the importance of internships during my classes. I listened to his advice and can say definitively that without an internship, I would not be where I am today. Being able to connect learning in the classroom with the practical application of knowledge in the workplace has changed my life for the better. In addition, being in a research-driven program, the hunger for knowledge and information was instilled in my core values at FSU. I continue to utilize this mindset to drive better outcomes in the workplace and my personal life.”

When asked why he chose to be part of the CCI Leadership Board, the initial motivation was to ensure a more generational representation of younger alumni. He recognized the importance of including voices from multiple generations to continue the College’s growth and success.

Bower added, “Alumni giving is not limited to financial contributions; it encompasses a broad spectrum of support.” He continues to emphasize that everyone has something to give, and every act of generosity counts. From offering financial assistance to giving back one’s time, sharing a network of connections, or showcasing individual talents, there are multiple ways to make a difference. Even recent graduates facing financial constraints can contribute by maintaining connections, sharing career opportunities and guidance with students, or volunteering their expertise. Each act of generosity, no matter the form, can transform lives and foster stronger connections among alumni and the institution.

Alumni giving plays a vital role in the success and growth of our college community. The commitment and generosity of our alumni members ensure that future generations of students have access to life-changing opportunities.
