Dr. Tricia Montgomery, Director of Clinical Education in the School of Communication Science and Disorders (SCSD), was recently voted President of the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Science and Disorders (CAPCSD).
Previously, Montgomery served as the President-Elect, where she focused on reinforcing the overarching vision of the organization, which has transitioned in her current position to work in the forefront rather than behind the scenes.
“Now, stepping into the role of President, the responsibilities shift in a meaningful way. I’m leading board meetings, setting the strategic agenda, representing the association in broader conversations, and making key decisions that shape our path forward. The transition is a shift from preparation to action, from supporting the vision to actively guiding it,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery views CAPCSD as a driving force for the field and serves to elevate education in communication science and disorders. As President, she hopes to continue to build a sturdy foundation for fellow faculty and students, giving them every prospect in widening their horizon for success in their careers. Specifically, she emphasizes the notion of having a flexible mindset as a leader. “It’s a strategic asset…that sparks innovation and brings out the best in others.”
At FSU, Montgomery works closely with the clinical team at SCSD to ensure students are on the correct course in leading them to successful careers and spearheaded efforts to allow students to have an internship in their final semester.
“I saw students come alive in clinical settings—gaining confidence, insight, and a sense of purpose that just didn’t happen in the classroom alone. They became more confident, more reflective, and more grounded in their professional identities. That experience drew me to the challenge of bridging academic preparation with real-world practice—making sure students aren’t just knowledgeable, but truly ready to serve their communities,” Montgomery said.
