Anne Reed, a doctoral scholar in the School of Communication Science and Disorders, and her mentor Kelly Farquharson, a SCSD associate professor, recently published an article on speechpathology.com, a website which brings together working professionals and allows industry experts to share their knowledge in order to provide the opportunity for continued learning.
Reed and Farquharson’s article “20Q: Dynamics of School-Based Speech and Language Therapy Variables” discusses therapy variables such as therapy quality, SLP job satisfaction, and session dosage as well as how they affect child outcomes. When asked about the importance of these variables, Reed explained that factors such as therapy dosage and setting directly impact the progress a child makes in their communication skills. Farquharson shared that Reed and herself hope to help speech-language pathologists (SLPs) understand the complexities of school-based practice and how its many moving parts can affect child outcomes.
“This article is really actionable,” Farquharson explained. “We wrote it for busy SLPs who are actively looking for ways to quickly and efficiently implement best practices.”
Reed shared with CCI what this publication means to her. “Our article on SpeechPathology.com is the first of my work to be published. I appreciate that speech-language pathologists will be able to read our article and make an immediate connection to their work with clients.” Farquharson also expressed her excitement as well as her pride for her mentee, stating “This publication is a great start to what will undoubtedly be a prolific career for her. The first publication is always a major milestone, and I’m very proud to see her achieving it.”
