FSU-SLIS doctoral candidate Yong Jeong Yi has been awarded a 2011 Beta Phi Mu Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in the amount of $3,000.
Up to six Garfield Fellowships are awarded each year to library and information studies doctoral students who are working on their dissertations. Requirements include:
- Meeting LIS program requirements for advancement to candidacy (all requirements for the degree except for the writing and the defense of the dissertation have been completed)
- Submission of:
- an abstract of the dissertation (no more than 300 words)
- a letter from the school’s dean or director indicating dissertation topic approval
- three letters of recommendation
- a personal statement from applicant about post-dissertation plans (no more than 500 words)
Founded in 1948, Beta Phi Mu is the international library and information studies honor society. Its international headquarters are currently located at the School of Library & Information Studies of the Florida State University. Dr. Christie Koontz is its director.
Founded in 1957, the Gamma Chapter of Beta Phi Mu at the School of Library & Information Studies of Florida State University is the second oldest continually existent chapter of the organization. Graduating master’s and doctoral students of the School of Library & Information Studies are eligible to become members of the Gamma Chapter by invitation only.
