Communications Intern (Paid) @ United Nations Development Programme

Background

The United Nations Development Programme is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan. Working in support of the Regional Bureaus, the GPN also aims to provide rapid and integrated support to UNDP country offices, combining policy advice, technical expertise, financial resources, agile tools and procedures, and partnerships. Within the GPN, the Crisis Bureau guides UNDP’s corporate crisis and fragility-related strategies and vision for crisis prevention, response and recovery and lead corporate support in response to crisis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Communications Intern will work under the supervision of the SURGE Delivery Lab Manager and under the overall guidance of Communications Analyst. The Intern will be responsible for helping increase awareness around and engagement with the ExpRes Roster and SURGE Delivery Lab.

The consultant is responsible for:

  • Providing mentoring on critical operational and procurement functions and issues.
  • Experimenting with innovative solutions and collaborate with office staff in identifying solutions that are in line with the Programme and Policies Operations and Procedures (POPP).
  • Providing operations advisory support to senior management to address persisting operational bottlenecks
  • Implementing more streamlined and flexible processes to ensure operational effectiveness and that procurement activities are achieving best value for money and lower cost of goods and services.

Key Deliverables

Deliverable 1: 30%

– Create social media written/photo/video content for the UNDP ExpRes Roster’s public Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, the SURGE Blog, and internal UNDP communication mediums.

Deliverable 2: 30%
– Assist communications and data visualization efforts for any of the SURGE Delivery Lab’s active Engagements.

Deliverable 3: 20%

– Assist in the creation of promotional materials for the widened awareness of the SURGE Delivery Lab throughout UNDP Country Offices and UNDP as a whole.

Deliverable 4: 20%

– As necessary, assist in the development of Country Support Management Team-wide and Crisis Bureau-wide communications products, such as report, facts sheets, and updates.

Institutional Arrangements

The expert will report to the SURGE Delivery Lab Manager and work under the day to-day guidance of the Communications Analyst.

Required Skills and Experience

I. Academic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or equivalent university degree in Communications, Media Production, Public Administration, International Affairs or other relevant disciplines.

II. Skills:

  • Ability to summarize a large amount of information and translate it into a visually compelling product for a public audience.
  • Good working knowledge of social media community management and experience in content creation. Knowledge of analytical tools.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.
  • Video editing
  • High-level Writing
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud Apps (InDesign, Illustrator or Premiere Pro), Figma or Canva will be an asset.

III. Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English

Payment Modality

Payment to the intern will be made based on deliverables and upon certification of satisfactory completion and will result in a $1,000.00 USD monthly compensation, totaling up to $3,000.00 USD by the end of the internship.

Start date: The selected candidate is expected to start his/her internship on the 6th of June 2022 but flexibility to come early for in-house training would be appreciated.
