Job Description

The applicant will be part of a team with primary responsibility for the accuracy and thoroughness of the editorial content of newyorker.com, a publication that covers national and international affairs, culture, tech, and science.

The fact-checking department is known for its high standards. The applicant should be familiar with the range of topics covered by The New Yorker, both online and in the print magazine.

The applicant should be prepared to work diplomatically with writers, editors, and sources on complex subjects and on tight deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities

  • to keep continuously abreast of developments in national and international politics, science, and culture
  • to be able to quickly analyze a manuscript for factual errors, logical flaws, and significant omissions
  • to be able to efficiently examine a writer’s sources and, where necessary, to identify additional documents and/or sources
  • to be able to quickly read those documents, interview those subjects, and accurately distill relevant information
  • to work effectively with a team of producers, copy editors, and editors across the publication

Requirements:

  • a strong understanding of ethical reporting standards and practices
  • a generalist’s interest in world and national affairs and a scholar’s aptitude for precision
  • an interest in a broad range of cultural subjects
  • diplomatic skills sufficient to be able to work successfully with a range of people in complex situations
  • availability for a Saturday-to-Wednesday schedule and occasional nights
  • proficiency or fluency in a second language is preferred, but not required
