The Kenton County Public Library seeks applicants for the full-time position of Young Adult Programmer/ Librarian at the Erlanger Branch. This position will be responsible for the design and delivery of programs for young adults, grades 6 through 12. We seek an energetic candidate who genuinely enjoys teens, can create an atmosphere of trust and acceptance, who is interested in popular culture and technology and is willing to try new things. The variable schedule includes some evening and weekend hours.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

§  Conduct and/or assist with programming for young adults including planning, preparation and execution of various programs for grades 6 through 12.

§  Provide patron assistance at the adult reference desk.

§  Interact positively with teens using the library and provide advice and training for other staff to better work with teens.

§  Create, plan and lead book discussion groups for young adults.

§  Actively pursue expertise in YA literature and participate in the development of the YA collection in all formats

§  Coordinate and conduct the Erlanger Branch’s Teen Advisory Board.

§  Work with schools and groups in the library’s service area to coordinate programs, school visits, tours and other cooperative programming for teenagers.

§  Meet regularly with young adult staff system wide to coordinate programs to be conducted at various locations.

§  Coordinate with staff from various departments to plan and implement annual library programs such as Young Adult Summer Reading and Teen Read Week.

§  Work with other library departments such as Community Relations, Systems, Collection Development and Technical Services to facilitate the various aspects of young adult programming.

§  Work with other branch programming staff to create and implement family programming.

§  Compile a monthly report on programs and activities.

§  Coordinate displays for young adult materials.

§  Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

§  An MLS from an ALA-accredited program is preferred; or a combination of a bachelor degree in education or a related field and relevant experience.

§  Experience working with youth is required. Experience with programming and/or working with teenagers grades 6-12 is preferred.

§  Ability to communicate effectively with all ages and to work well with patrons, especially teenagers.

§  Must be a problem solver with ability to work independently.

§  Ability to work well with library staff and create a positive impression on patrons.

§  Ability to get KDLA certification.

§  Interest in and familiarity with YA literature

§  Knowledge of and familiarity with computers and new technology, including the Internet, gaming and interactive media, plus a willingness to keep abreast of new technologies of interest to teens and an ability to incorporate this knowledge into programming.

§  A sense of humor.

§  Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach and retrieve items weighing 20-30 lbs.  Ability to lift 30 lbs and push or pull book trucks weighing 100 lbs.
