Professor Biswajit Das, director of the Centre for Culture, Media & Governance at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India, will give two presentations at The Florida State University’s School of Communication on Tuesday, May 29.
The first, “Mapping Media Education in India,” will be held from 9:15 to 11 a.m. in Room 2102 of University Center Building D. The second, “Communication Studies in India: Emerging Challenges and Prospects,” will be held from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. in Room 1103 of UCD. Dr. Das’ visit is supported by the John H. Phipps Fund at the FSU Foundation.
Dr. Das is a professor and founding director of the Centre for Culture, Media & Governance, an interdisciplinary center engaged in Communication research and teaching. He is a member of Innovation Council, the governing body of India’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in planning media education courses in India, and a member of India’s Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Media and Communication.
Dr. Das has three decades of teaching and research experience in Communication Studies, Development Communication and Sociology of Mass Communication. He has contributed to media theory, history, ethnography and method. He has been a visiting fellow at the University of Windsor, Canada, the East-West Centre in Hawaii and the Indian Institute of Advanced study, Shimla. His research has been supported by the Indo-French Scholarship, Shastri-Indo Canadian Institute, Charles Wallace India Trust, Ford Foundation, UNESCO, UNDP, University Grants Commission and ICSSR.
He has co-edited three volumes on Communication Processes from Sage Publications: Media and Mediation, 2005; Social and Symbolic, 2007; Communication, Culture & Confrontation, 2011; he also has published articles in various national and international journals and lectured at various universities and institutes in India and abroad.
